Created in 2007 and first taking place in 2008, The Lord Mayor's Big Curry Lunch is the City of London's hottest annual event that raises money to help those who have served in His Majesty's Armed Forces worldwide.
On 28th March 2023, the Swedish Club in Helsinki hosted the Second International Lord Mayor's Big Curry Lunch. This event brought together a warm and convivial gathering of Commonwealth Veterans in Finland, sponsors, and participants. Organised by The British & Commonwealth Chamber of Commerce in Finland, the event for the second year in a row successfully celebrated camaraderie and shared experiences in a friendly atmosphere, with excellent food and drinks on offer.
While the Helsinki event might not have matched the scale of its London counterpart in terms of participant numbers, it still made a significant impact. The intimate setting allowed for a more personal experience, with each Commonwealth Veteran in attendance having the opportunity to share their captivating stories and anecdotes from their time in service. These tales of bravery, resilience, and camaraderie were thoroughly enjoyed by all guests, who were given a unique insight into the lives and experiences of the veterans.
The presence of the special guest, British Defence Attaché Wing Commander Steve Boyle, and his wife Linda further elevated the event, as they graciously engaged with attendees and contributed to the convivial atmosphere.
The lunch itself was a fantastic combination of 4 different Indian curries, including Lamb, Salmon-shellfish, Chicken, and Vegetarian curry, prepared by Tero Blom himself, owner of the Theron Group, under the guidance of talented young chef Nico Devandara who presented the dishes to us. Guests also enjoyed quality beverages, including Spitfire beer, courtesy of Servaali Oy, and Mayu wine kindly provided by Anora Oy.
The second international Lord Mayor's Big Curry Lunch in Helsinki was a remarkable event that showcased the strength and unity of the Commonwealth community in Finland.
