The Churchill 150 Dinner

150th Anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill's Birth

On the eve of Sir Winston Churchill’s birth, 29th November, the Helsinki Bourse Club set the stage for a remarkable evening of tribute and celebration. The Churchill 150 Dinner, hosted by the British & Commonwealth Chamber of Commerce in Finland Ry (B3CF), drew an esteemed gathering to honour the life and legacy of one of history’s most iconic leaders. This elegant event wove together history, music, and fine dining in a celebration that will be remembered for years to come.

Guests were welcomed with Pol Roger Champagne, a fitting nod to Churchill’s preferred celebratory drink, as pianist Geoff White set a serene tone with live music. The evening officially began with a captivating performance by singer Tove Ljungqvist, immediately engaging the audience with her melodic voice. The Master of Ceremonies, B3CF Board Member Nora Haapala, expertly guided the evening's proceedings, ensuring a seamless flow of events.

The formal programme commenced with a warm welcome by B3CF Chairman Pekka Halmet and Matti Koskeala, Chairman of the Helsinki Pörssiklubi's Security Policy Activity Group. Their thoughtful words underscored the historical and cultural significance of the evening. Grace was then delivered by Maria Parker, setting a reflective tone as guests prepared to enjoy the first course.

The dinner's highlight was the presence of Guest of Honour Marina Brounger, Sir Winston Churchill’s great-granddaughter. Marina, a trustee of the John Lyon Foundation, a governor of Harrow School, and an adviser to Churchill Heritage, shared her unique insights into Churchill’s enduring legacy. Her distinguished background added depth to her reflections, which resonated powerfully with the audience.

The main course was a highlight, not only for its superb quality but also for the meaningful conversations it inspired among guests. The setting encouraged the exchange of ideas and the strengthening of professional and personal connections.

The loyal toasts followed, delivered with great reverence by Pekka Halmet, honouring the President, and Garry Parker, honouring the King. These tributes encapsulated the evening's themes of leadership and tradition.

The keynote presentation, delivered by Markku Ruotsila, was a scholarly highlight. An adjunct professor of American church history at the University of Helsinki and of American and British history at the University of Tampere, Ruotsila offered an illuminating perspective on Churchill’s connections with Finland. His decades of engagement with the International Churchill Society and his authorship of Churchill and Finland enriched his address, captivating the audience with deep insights and historical context.

The dessert course—Stilton cheese served with port and a chocolate cigar—added a refined touch to the culinary journey. Guests were also treated to a liquorice cigar by Kouvolan Lakritsi, a playful nod to Churchill’s famed cigar habit.

Andrew Marsden MStJ, Sheriff of the City of London (2022–2023), delivered the toast to Sir Winston Churchill. With an illustrious background that spans leadership roles in multiple Livery companies and contributions to the City of London, his toast was both eloquent and heartfelt, perfectly capturing the spirit of the evening.

A particularly poignant moment was the Vote of Thanks, led by Vladislav Dobrokhotov, Executive Director of B3CF. This segment began with the presentation of a Certificate of Recognition to Pertti Salolainen CBE, conferring upon him the title of Honorary Life Vice-President of B3CF. The award celebrated his unparalleled dedication, leadership, and contributions, which have profoundly impacted the chamber and its mission.

As the clock struck midnight, the assembled guests sang a jubilant "Happy Birthday" to Sir Winston, a fitting conclusion to an evening of celebration and reflection. The festivities carried on with music, camaraderie, and warm conversations, leaving attendees with cherished memories of a night dedicated to honouring a towering figure in history.

The Churchill 150 Dinner was more than a commemoration; it was a tribute to the timeless principles of courage, leadership, and vision that Churchill embodied. The evening exemplified the enduring relevance of his legacy and the strength of the community that gathers to celebrate it. We extend our deepest gratitude to all participants and sponsors, including Bentley Suomi, and Routa Digital, for their contributions to the success of this extraordinary event.
